Facts Found:
• 5-6 knots of wind.
• Flat water.
• Current was a large factor,
• Sea Maiden (SM) and Fiasco III (F) were approaching a weather mark to be rounded to port.
• Fiasco was on the starboard layline about 7 boatlengths from the mark when SM, on port, crossed about 3 lengths in front of Fiasco.
• SM tacked to starboard, clear ahead and about 2 boatlengths to windward of Fiasco.
• SM entered the zone clear ahead of Fiasco by approximately one boatlength.
• The boats continued to converge.
• Fiasco obtained an inside overlap as SM reached the mark.
• The lateral distance when the overlap occurred was about ½ boatlength.
• Contact occurred between SM’s port stern pulpit and F’s starboard forward quarter.
• Contact occurred between F’s port, aft third and the mark.
Conclusions:
• SM entered the zone clear ahead and was entitled to mark room from Fiasco (RRS 18.2(b)).
• Fiasco established an overlap to leeward of SM and SM did not keep clear as required by RRS 11.
• Fiasco did not give SM mark room as required by RRS 18.2(b).
• SM is exonerated from breaking RRS 11 by RRS 21.
• Fiasco and SM both broke RRS 14 by failing to avoid contact that caused damage.
Decisions:
• Fiasco is disqualified for breaking for breaking RRS 18.2(b) and RRS 14.
• Sea Maiden is disqualified for breaking RRS 14.
