THE CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB OF PORTLAND OREGON CYC was organized in 1974 for the primary purposes of sponsoring sailboat racing activities on the Columbia River, providing social and networking opportunities for its members and the sailing community as a whole, sponsoring educational activities and programs on sailing, and promoting amateur sailboat racing in general. We remain committed to the concept of a club just for sailors, and primarily for racing sailors. We are probably best-known for our sponsorship of the Oregon Offshore Race, but are just as proud of our other events, the success of our members in races all over the Northwest (and beyond), and the other contributions we are able to make to the sailing community.
RACING As Portland's only long distance and offshore yacht club, racing is at the heart of CYC’s activities. The Oregon Offshore Race remains the only international sailing event in Oregon, starting at the mouth of the Columbia River and finishing 200 miles later in Victoria, British Columbia. This is a major event in all respects and is attracting increasing attention from outside the local area. Columbia River races include the CYC Opening Day Regatta, CYC Friday night Beer Can races, and Midnight Madness.
EDUCATION In addition to the informal work to help CYC members get “up to speed” on the race course, CYC will be assisting the Sailing Foundation of Seattle to host a Safety At Sea seminar bi-annually in the Portland area
SOCIAL EVENTS CYC sponsors a number of events for club members each year. Our signature social event is the Pray For Wind party held in the Spring which encourages relationship building throughout our community and gives everyone a chance to use those expired flares. A complete calendar of events, race results, general club news and member profiles are published each month in the CYC Newsletter.
MEMBERSHIP Our three primary classes of membership are Offshore Racing, River Racing, and Associate Member. Offshore Racing membership is open to owners of yachts who plan to participate in the Oregon Offshore at a discounted entry fee and CYC-sponsored river races at no additional charge. River Racing membership is open to owners of yachts who plan to participate in CYC-sponsored river races at no additional charge. Associate membership is open to crew who are interested in attending CYC-sponsored social events at no additional charge (note: Offshore and River racers also get into CYC social events free of charge). Elected officers may be either Racing or Associate members, thus, becoming a non-racing member is an ideal way for crew to participate in club administration and decisions that help shape sailboat racing in the Pacific NW. Dues are used to support racing activities, social events, and club administration.
