River Adventure Camp

In River Adventure Camp, kids have a great time exploring the Willamette River and learning about local wildlife and water safety while learning to sail in Optimist Prams. Adventures include nature hikes at Oaks Park, visiting a floating home community, kayaking, and sailing to downtown Portland. Participants must know how to swim and will be asked to complete a 50-foot swim check with a life jacket.

Swim Check
All youth and adult classes (excluding Minnows) are asked to complete a 50-foot swim check with a life jacket on. This consists of jumping off the dock and swimming to a swim ladder 50 feet down the dock. Particpants will then remove their life jackets, tread water for approximately one minute, and then put their life jacket back on in the water. The swim check allows coaches to gauge the participant's comfort level in the water and is an important safety feature of our classes. Participants will also be instructed on the proper way to handle a capsized boat and will complete the practice check concurrently with the swim check. Swim checks are required for class participation.
