Youth Class Descriptions:
  • Our Opti class uses the Optimist pram designed for ages 7-11. We offer two levels of learning for beginners and intermediate sailors.
  • Our RS Zests classes are designed for ages 10-15 weighing 60+ lbs. RS Zests have two sails and room for multiple sailors. We offer two levels of learn to sail, beginner and intermediate.
  • Our Club 420s/J22 Class is designed for students ages 12+ weighing 80+ lbs that want to learn at the highest level. This program combines two prior classes, Club 420s and Keelboat kids, to provide experiences in dingy racing and keelboat spinnaker use.
Family Sail Description:
  • Kids don't need to be the only ones having all the fun! This summer we are offering our family sailing sessions separately from our main camps as a series of evening sails. This option is offered to parents/aunts/uncles/guardians with children ages 8 and up. The program will be a Learn-to-Sail curriculum that teaches students the basics of boat handling, seamanship, safety, and teamwork as a family. The curriculum will develp competence and confidence in our sailors in a safe and fun learning environment. We will use the RS Zests, with each family having two boats available. Adults participating need to be comfortable sailing a dingy, which is smaller and more athletic than a keelboat. Every family must have one adult 18+ to qualify for this class and family sizes are capped at 4 participants.

Experience Needed:

  • Level 1 classes- No experience needed.
  • Level 2 classes- Need basic sailing knowledge and experience.
  • Level 3 classes- Must be proficient at skippering and have completed either a Level 2 Zest Class or participated in one of the spring/fall high school C420 sailing programs.
Please note, experienced sailors can be registered for a less experienced class, though it's recommended that sailors sign up for the level that fits their experience the most. Additionally, class fees increase as levels progress due to coaches teaching at a higher skill level.

Class Sizes:
  • Optis: 4-12 students
  • RS Zests: 4-8 students
  • Club 420s/J22: 4-6 students
  • Family Sail: 1-2 families
If a class doesn't meet the minimum, parents will be notified with the choice of a refund or signing up for another session.

Please Note:
  • Classes will not be cancelled due to weather, but our on the water activities may be affected.
  • Classes will not take place on Saturdays or Sundays.
  • If a sailor has not been picked up 30 minutes after class ends, there will be a $15 charge per child per day for care.
Scholarships:
  • The Jackson Yacht Club Foundation (JYCF) has a limited number of class scholarships for those in need. JYCF considers applications on a case-by-case basis, and scholarships are subject to the availability of budgeted funds. Applications must be completed 20 days prior to the starting date of their session of preference. Please email the Sailing Director, Anna Marie Jones, at jycsailing@gmail.com to obtain an application.
