Dunedin Youth Sailing (DYSA) Fall 2024 sailing classes will be offered on Sundays starting Sunday September 8, 2024 for 9 weeks.  

 
Class size is limited to 10 PAID students each class.  Any additional students or students with unpaid fees will be put on a Waitlist and that student will not be considered registered for the class.  Placement on a Waitlist does not guarantee placement in the class.  Payment is DUE AT TIME OF REGISTRATION.  Date of payment will determine fee amount.  Early registration for current students has a discount.  Discount for current students ends June 30, 2024. Open Registration begins July 1, 2024. 
OPTI Fleet Racing and Double-handed Seamanship class are offered subject to a minimum class size of six (6) sailors.
Please note: DYSA at any time may change: time of class, coach, and/or your child's class selection based on student's ability as determined by the coaches.
 
PARENT VOLUNTEERS: DYSA is a voluteer organization.  Parents are expected to voluteer in some capacity: any and all help is appreciated.
 
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS: 
   (1) EXPLORING SAILING (OPPIs): For all new to sailing or in need of more experience, this class explores the art of sailing through hands on experiences with a focus on developing a love for the lifelong sport of sailing. Youth sailors will become familiar with rigging the sailboat, points of sail, wind direction and water safety. This class is for beginners and returning sailors that wish to review the basics of sailing. Ages 8 to 13. Time: 9:00am-12:00pm 
    (2)  OPTI GREEN TEAM (EXPLORING GREEN FLEET-IODs): Newer sailors that wish to hone their skipper skills. This class builds on the basics previously learned. Perfect for returning sailors. Prerequisite: Must be comfortable sailing upwind and have sailed previously with DYSA*. Ages 8 to 13.  Time: 9:00am-12:00pm  ●Time subject to change●.
   (3)  OPTI FLEET RACING (IODs): Focus on OPTI racing skills and rules for experienced OPTI sailors.  Prerequisite: Have previously sailed with DYSA or have racing experience*.  Ages 8 to 13.  Time: 1:00pm-4:30pm  ●Time subject to change and class is tenatively offered based on a minium of 6 registrations●.
   (4) LEARN TO SAIL 420s (420s): Learn to handle larger boats and work as a team.  For sailors MUST be in at least 7th grade, at least 13 years old at time of registration and weight over 100 lbs.  Time 9:00 am-12:00pm.
    (5) YOUTH LEARN TO WINDSURF.  Classes for students 13 years old and older.  Learn how to windsurf.  Time:  1:00pm-4:30pm. No experience necessary.
 
Students in High School should also consider the High School Practice Program on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.  HS Practice under separate registration. 
 
*Students will be placed in class appropriate to ability to complete swim test and their sailing ability.  Sailing ability and class placement as determined by the coach of the class.  
 
GEAR: PFD with a whistle, trapese harness (crew), closed-toe water shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunblock, and water clothes.
