Competitors will adhere to the “Basic Principles” of the RRS which say in part that when competitors break a Rule they will promptly take a penalty, which may be to retire. This is regardless of whether “protest” is hailed and/or a protest flag is displayed. Competitors will be familiar with, at minimum, RRS Part 2 “When Boats Meet”, RRS Part 3 “Other Requirements When Racing”, RRS 31 “Touching a Mark”, and RRS 44.1 “Taking a Penalty”.
