A hearing was held on the request for Redress. Present were Win Minot, Chief Judge, Bob Hurst, for the Race Committee and PRO for the second day of races and Bob Mason, skipper of H12 Sail# 622. Hurst stated that the board for the second race on the second day (Race # 5 for the Independence Series) shown to competitors prior to the start stated that the first windward leg would be 0.5 nautical miles and the second windward leg would be 0.3 nautical miles. This was a mistake, since the intention was to have both windward legs be 0.3 nautical miles. This was consistent with prior races, and the sailing instructions stated that the shorter distance would obtain for both windward legs. Moreover, the correct lengths for the two legs were broadcast to all competing H12s prior to the start of the race. Mason stated that he had read the board and followed its instructions. He had not noticed any other boats sailing to the longer mark. The Protest Committee held that redress would be granted to 622 on the grounds that the Race Committee had made a mistake on the board and only 622 had been misled by the mistake. The Protest Committee further held that, in lieu of its actual finishing place in Race #5, 622 should be granted points for its finish in that Race equal to 622's actual average finishing place in Races # 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.
