This a handicapped long-distance race requires competing boats with one person on board to start in the vicinity of Mile Buoy, round MBARI “A” and Santa Cruz Mile Buoys to starboard and finish at MPYC-F buoy. The race is 42 nautical miles in length forming a large equilateral triangle in southeast Monterey Bay. Harvey Kilpatrick was the perpetrator of this annual classic in 1966. He and Pat Patterson (then Rear Commodore) designed the unspeakable trophy, which was always discreetly covered by a black cloth. Unfortunately, the original trophy was tucked under a table and left behind at a Commodore’s Ball, never to be seen again. Thanks to Allan Patterson for replacing the trophy by having a new one cast.
